Youth on Farms

Connecting Youth with Agriculture…

Thanks to the Canada Summer Jobs program, Groundbreakers is able to connect local food producers with young people looking for work and training on a variety of local farms in the Bulkley Valley.

Youth receive hands-on farming and gardening experience that can lead to future employment in the industry or give them the skills and confidence to start their own agriculture related business. Producers receive young people to work with them through Groundbreakers' wage subsidy and hiring program. This allows producers to not only affordably add to the skilled workforce of their operation, but also to the local agriculture workforce.

Voices from previous years…

2020 held a remarkable summer for me working with Groundbreakers. I worked at various farms including: Curt & Betsy Gesch, Living Roots Family Farm, & Lesley Jackson’s. I did everything from painting to moving cows. I was being paid a good wage and working an average of 5 hours per day. Working for Groundbreakers has more benefits than just getting paid; you also get to learn a ton of stuff. I learned how to weed whack really well, how to drive an ATV, a side by side and a tractor. My favourite skill that I learned is how to drive a tractor. I learned a lot about agriculture, animals, & building. I was very happy to have a summer job while everything was closed or shut down. I look forward to doing this every summer for the next few years.

Through Groundbreakers’ Youth on Farm program, I’ve learned many things over the summer! The most valuable skill that I’ve learned is the different methods of harvesting. I was not sure how to harvest the produce but working in Hugs farm through Groundbreakers has taught me how. I’ve also learned how to just sit on dirt and get myself to work patiently. I am interested in harvesting and packaging veggies again. Despite the physical hardness, it was totally worth the experience. I will never forget this summer and will carry on with all the lessons farming has taught me.

Skills Building

Although most of the time Youth on Farms (YoF) participants are working on agriculture operations throughout the Bulkley Valley, they also spend some time helping out the School Gardens Program. In the summer of 2024, YoF participants learned how to install drip irrigation at Muheim Elementary School in Smithers. This turned out to be a highlight of the summer - the irrigation system worked perfectly and was just in time for the sunny days of July and August!
